Family Planning & Contraception

Family planning is crucial in ensuring a comfortable life not just for you, but also for your spouse and children. Hence it is important that one plans the timing of a pregnancy so as to ensure physical health as well as financial and emotional stability upon the arrival of an addition to the family.

To properly plan your family, different types of contraceptives may be explored depending on your needs and preferences.

Common Contraceptive Methods Include:

Oral Contraceptive Pill

With this pill, the hormone levels of the woman will be regulated. By limiting the progesterone and estrogen levels, it will stop the ovary from releasing an egg, hence inhibiting ovulation and by extension, fertilization. One pill is taken every day at around the same time for three weeks, followed by a pill-free week.

When taken correctly, the efficacy rate stands at 99.7%. There are many varieties available in the market and Dr Jen will identify which is most suited for you.

Spermicide

This is a chemical which kills sperm. It comes in the form of a gel or jelly and it is applied to the vagina before sexual intercourse.

It only has a 70% effectiveness in preventing unwanted pregnancies. The use of spermicides should always be coupled with the use of a condom.

Intrauterine Device (IUD)

This is a small anchor-shaped device that is placed inside the womb by a gynaecologist. This prevents the egg from being successfully embedded onto the uterine lining, thus preventing the development of a foetus. It has a success rate of 98% in preventing unwanted pregnancies. IUDs can also be left in the womb for 2-5 years, depending on the type used.
