Abortion, also known as Termination of Pregnancy (TOP), is usually performed when there is an unplanned pregnancy, or if the woman’s health is seriously compromised if the pregnancy were to continue.
Regardless of reason, we understand that this is an emotional and distressing situation, which is why we strive to provide sensitive, supportive, and confidential care to women who find themselves in this situation.

Legal Guidelines on Abortion in Singapore:
- Abortion is legal in Singapore up to 24 weeks, unless the woman’s health is jeopardized
- Women must undergo mandatory counselling and wait at least 48 hours before confirming to go for the procedure
- Unmarried patients below 16 years old (and who are not rape victims) at the time of abortion will need to be referred to the HPB Counselling Centre for pre-termination of pregnancy counselling, and produce the Certificate of Attendance (COA) issued by the HPB Counselling Centre before the clinic may perform the abortion.
- Full confidentiality is guaranteed. However, if you are below 16 years of age, a police report will have to be made as it is considered a criminal offence to have sexual intercourse with a minor below the age of 16.
Foreigners may only obtain an abortion in Singapore if any of the following conditions are met:
- They have a valid work permit or employment pass
- They have stayed in Singapore for at least 4 months
- They are married to a Singaporean or are a PR
- Their lives will be endangered if an abortion is not immediately performed

When To Get An Abortion
As foetal size increases rapidly over the weeks, it is highly recommended to decide on an abortion as early in the pregnancy as possible, as it is much safer and simpler with less risks. The method of abortion also differs depending on how advanced the pregnancy is, which your gynaecologist and abortion surgeon in Singapore will advise you on.
The methods used to induce abortion vary depending on the stage of pregnancy. The further along the pregnancy, the higher the risk of complications, and the more complex the procedure will be. Therefore, it is highly recommended to make a decision as early as possible.

Pregnancy Stages
For pregnancies below 9 weeks, abortions are conducted through a simple vacuum aspiration. Compared to later-term abortions, early abortions done during the first trimester are relatively painless, quick, and have a shorter recovery period. Complications are rare and the procedure itself usually takes just about 15 minutes; the cost will range from $1,200 - $1,400.
Because of how advanced the pregnancy is, the abortion can no longer be done as a simple early procedure. It is treated as a later first-trimester abortion and is carried out in stages, beginning with preparation (medicine will be inserted into the vagina to make the abortion safer for the patient), followed by the abortion one to two days afterward.
Although the preparation is similar, the abortion procedure becomes more challenging as the pregnancy is more advanced. In cases of later-stage abortions that would typically involve longer hospital stays and more complex care, our clinic provides a more streamlined approach that minimizes hospitalisation, maintains safety, and helps reduce patient stress. This approach has been practised by Dr Jen for over 30 years.
For pregnancies beyond 15 weeks
Stage 1: Preparatory Phase
During a second-trimester abortion, medication is first administered vaginally to prepare and soften the cervix in anticipation of foetal expulsion. This step is performed in the clinic and typically takes about 5 minutes. The patient may return home afterwards and usually comes back after approximately 2 days.
Stage 2: Delivery of the Foetus
On the day of the main procedure, which is usually scheduled about 2 days after the initial visit, patients are advised not to eat or drink beforehand. During this visit, further medication is administered to soften the uterus and dilate the cervix, thereby inducing labour. The time required for delivery varies from patient to patient and depends on the strength and duration of uterine contractions.
Stage 3: Delivery of the Placenta
To ensure complete evacuation of the womb and to reduce the risk of complications such as infection or heavy bleeding, remaining pregnancy tissue — including the placenta and uterine lining — may be surgically removed if necessary. This is done through a procedure known as dilation and curettage (D&C), where a curette is used to gently scrape and suction out residual tissue. The procedure typically takes less than 20 minutes and is performed under sedation, so the patient does not feel pain.
Stage 4: Prevention of Bleeding
Moderate bleeding and cramping for several days to a couple of weeks after the abortion process is normal. Antibiotics and painkillers may be prescribed to help prevent infection and manage discomfort.
Whether you choose a medical or surgical approach, we prioritize your safety throughout the process.

Post-Procedural Care
To facilitate faster healing and prevent complications, patients are advised to avoid heavy lifting, aerobic exercises, and sexual activities for 2 weeks after the procedure. This includes inserting anything into the vagina such as tampons and douches. Swimming and hot baths must be avoided. Smoking, drinking, and taking drugs are also not allowed.
Moderate bleeding accompanied with cramps are normal, and can be managed with painkillers. Blood-thinning medications such as aspirin should be avoided as they can increase bleeding. Antibiotics may be prescribed to prevent infections.
Menstrual cycles should begin 3 to 6 weeks after the procedure, unless the patient is taking birth control pills or using an IUD. Additionally, a post-abortion check-up will be scheduled 2 to 3 weeks following the abortion, to ensure that everything is clear and healing as it should.
