Cervical Cancer Screening

What is Cervical Cancer?

Cervical cancer is the 4th most common cause of cancer around the world and is responsible for 8% of all deaths associated with cancer. Signs and symptoms associated with cervical cancer include bleeding from the vagina, pain during sexual intercourse and abnormal vaginal discharge.

Early detection plays a crucial role in preventing cervical cancer and improving treatment outcomes. Regular screening allows for abnormal cell changes to be identified and managed before they progress into cancer. For this reason, cervical cancer screening is recommended even in the absence of symptoms.

There are two options available for Cervical Cancer Screening:

Thin Prep

It is a painless procedure whereby tissue is obtained from the cervix. A spatula is used to harvest the cells required. These cells are then analysed in a laboratory to check for any abnormalities.

It is widely recommended to conduct a Thin Prep once every 3 – 5 years above the age of 25 (if results are normal) and more frequently if the results are abnormal. It is reported that timely Thin Preps reduce the incidence of cervical cancer by 80%.

Colposcopy

Colposcopy is a procedure that allows for a closer examination of the cervix to assess its overall health. During the examination, the cervix is viewed under magnification using a specialised instrument, enabling the doctor to identify any abnormal areas more clearly. The procedure is performed in-clinic and is generally not painful, though mild discomfort may be felt.

Colposcopy is usually recommended when cervical screening results are abnormal or when further evaluation is required. If necessary, a small tissue sample may be taken during the procedure for further laboratory analysis to determine the presence of abnormal or pre-cancerous changes.
