Breast Cancer Screening

What is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is a disease in which abnormal cells in the breast grow uncontrollably and form a tumour. It is the most common cancer affecting women worldwide. When detected early, breast cancer is highly treatable, with survival rates of approximately 80–90% in developed countries. Early detection remains the most important factor in improving outcomes.

What is Breast Cancer Screening?

Breast cancer screening refers to the use of mammograms and self-examinations to detect breast cancer at an early stage, often before symptoms are noticeable. Regular screening allows abnormalities to be identified early, when treatment is most effective.

Mammogram

A mammogram is a screening test whereby several X-ray images are taken to examine the breast for the presence of any abnormal growths. During the procedure, the breast is compressed and the radiologist takes X-ray images from multiple angles. Slight discomfort may be felt but this remains a highly important screening to prevent the most common cancer in women.
