However, like any medical procedure, there are risks involved, and complications (though rare) may arise. These include:
Infection
Infections can occur when bacteria or sexually transmitted infections (STIs) enter the reproductive organs during the procedure. This may affect the uterine lining, genital tract, reproductive organs, or the urinary system. Incomplete abortions can also lead to bacterial infections.
Patients who experience a fever of 38°C or higher within 24 hours following an abortion, accompanied by prolonged vaginal bleeding, severe cramps or abdominal pain, or abnormal vaginal discharge, should seek medical attention immediately.
Antibiotics are usually prescribed at the first sign of infection. In cases of severe infection, surgery may be required.
Incomplete Abortion
An incomplete abortion refers to a procedure that was only partially successful. In such cases, the pregnancy has been terminated, but pregnancy-related tissue has not been fully expelled from the body.
Incomplete abortions are characterized by severe cramping or abdominal pain, as well as prolonged and heavy bleeding. If left untreated, they can lead to serious infections.
Patients experiencing these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention from their Singapore abortion doctor. The uterus will be examined via ultrasound to detect and pinpoint the location of remnant tissues. Once identified, vacuum aspiration may be performed to remove them.
Heavy Bleeding
While lightly bleeding after an abortion procedure is normal and expected, passing large blood clots or experiencing heavy bleeding is not. Heavy bleeding accompanied by light-headedness or dizziness is a serious sign of blood loss and requires immediate medical attention.
Heavy bleeding is often a sign of an underlying issue such as an injury, infection, or incomplete abortion.
Effects on Future Pregnancies
Although abortion is a very safe and well-established procedure, women are exposed to certain risks each time they have undergone one. These risks include infections, uterine perforation and repair (which may lead to scar tissue formation), and injury to the cervix (which can result in cervical weakening).
Most of these complications, while rare and treatable, can be avoided by seeking care from a qualified and experienced abortion doctor.
