How Abortion Pills Work: A Comprehensive Guide

The abortion pill, also known as medical abortion, is used to terminate an early pregnancy typically up to seven weeks gestation. It involves the use of two types of medications that work together to terminate a pregnancy effectively: mifepristone and misoprostol.

What Happens During a Medical Abortion?

A medical abortion, under the supervision of a licensed doctor, is a safe and effective method of terminating an early pregnancy using abortion pills. The process involves the following steps:

1. Consultation and Medical Assessment

The doctor will first confirm the pregnancy, determine the gestational age, and assess the woman’s overall health to ensure that medical abortion is a suitable option.

2. Administration of Mifepristone

The first medication, mifepristone, is taken orally. This drug works by blocking progesterone, a hormone necessary for maintaining the pregnancy. This causes the uterine lining to break down and detaches the pregnancy from the uterine wall.

3. Taking Misoprostol

Approximately 24 to 48 hours after taking mifepristone, the second medication, misoprostol, is administered. Misoprostol can be taken orally or placed in the vagina, depending on medical guidance. This medication induces contractions of the uterine muscles, leading to the expulsion of pregnancy tissue through the vagina.

4. Experiencing the Expulsion Process

Following the intake of misoprostol, individuals typically experience cramping and bleeding, similar to a heavy menstrual period, as the body expels the pregnancy. This process can take several hours and may be accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, or chills.

5. Follow-Up Care

A follow-up appointment with the doctor is usually scheduled to ensure that the abortion is complete and to address any potential complications or side effects.

Is Medical Abortion Legal in Singapore?

Yes, medical abortion is legal in Singapore under the Termination of Pregnancy Act, which governs the regulations surrounding abortion services in the country. Our clinic provides medical abortions for pregnancies up to 7 weeks, as well as surgical abortion.

Who Should Not Get a Medical Abortion?

While medical abortion is a generally safe and effective method for terminating an early pregnancy, it is not suitable for everyone. Medical abortion is not suitable in cases of:

  • Ectopic Pregnancy: Medical abortion is ineffective for ectopic pregnancies, where the embryo implants outside the uterus, typically in a fallopian tube.
  • Advanced Pregnancy: Medical abortion is generally limited to the first trimester (up to 7 weeks gestation). Women who are in the later stages of pregnancy will need to consider surgical abortion.
  • Severe Health Conditions: Women with severe anaemia (a significant deficiency of red blood cells) or adrenal gland failure may face increased risks when using abortion medications.
  • Medication Interactions: Certain drugs, such as some anti-seizure medications or hormonal treatments, can interfere with the effectiveness of mifepristone and misoprostol.
  • Allergies to Medications: Although rare, allergic reactions to mifepristone or misoprostol can occur. Symptoms may include rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing.
  • Fear of Symptoms: The process of a medical abortion can be physically and emotionally challenging, involving cramping, bleeding, and other discomforts similar to a miscarriage.
  • Lack of Follow-Up: Medical abortion requires proper follow-up care to ensure that the abortion is complete and to address any complications. Women who are unable or unwilling to attend follow-up appointments are at increased risk of incomplete abortion and related health issues.

What Is the Price of Abortion Pills?

At our clinic in Singapore, the cost of abortion pills typically starts at around $500. However, the cost may increase depending on whether further treatments are needed, as well as other fees such as consultation charges, medications and diagnostic tests.

Why Do People Choose the Abortion Pill?

Many individuals opt for the abortion pill for several reasons:

  • Privacy & Perceived Convenience: Much of the process takes place at home, where it is perceived to be more convenient and private to some.
  • Safety: When used under medical supervision, the abortion pill is considered a generally safe method for terminating early pregnancies.
  • Non-Surgical Method: The medication-based approach is non-invasive

However, it is important to approach the use of abortion pills with caution. The abortion pill may not be suitable for everyone and carries potential risks if not properly supervised. Potential complications such as incomplete abortion, severe side effects, or adverse reactions highlight the necessity of professional medical guidance and appropriate follow-up care.
